Responding to referrals is a way for the university and its researcher to contribute to a knowledge-based management system, and to get researchers involved and knowledgeable about societal issues and needs. The Centre arranges meetings with researchers having expert knowledge on issues relating to the referrals. When researchers from different scientific backgrounds come together and discuss concrete problem descriptions and suggestions this can also generate research ideas and provide a basis for cooperation. At University of Gothenburg there are eight faculties with many institutions and researchers with expertise in the marine environment who can and want to contribute with their knowledge.

In cooperation with the faculties and the Swedish Institute for the Marine Environment the Centre has access to a large network of marine experts. Sea and Society will coordinate and take the lead in preparing and formulating replies to marine/maritime referrals on behalf of GU by taking responsibility of the following;

  1. External analysis, to keep updated on what is coming and what experts to involve
  2. Prioritising and focus of the referrals
  3. Coordination of replies, e.g. by inviting key persons at GU to discuss the referral and
  4. Writing of the reply.
