About us

The Centre for Sea and Society was inaugurated 1st of July 2015 and will become the new entry point to all marine and maritime activities within the University of Gothenburg. Lena Gipperth, Professor of Environmental Law at the School of Business, Economics and Law at the University of Gothenburg, is director of the new centre supported by a steering committee with representatives from all faculties.

The mission of the Centre for Sea and Society is to:

  • initiate, stimulate and develop transdisciplinary research and education within the marine/maritime field.
  • become the entry point to all marine and maritime activities and increase visibility.
  • be responsible for the cooperation with Chalmers maritime affairs and the Region of West Sweden through the Maritime Cluster of West Sweden.
  • promote increased use of the marine infrastructure for research and education.
  • cooperate with the Swedish Institute for the Marine Environment.
